It’s a Biden Boom: share the news

The Biden Boom

One of the most important stories of 2021 is one that does not get told enough: the Biden Economic Boom. Specifically, in less than 11 months, following the Trump Recession in which millions of jobs were lost, President Joe Biden has presided over a historic economic and jobs recovery. This includes:

–Extraordinary economic growth, estimated to be 7.8 percent this year.

–Income, wage and salary growth all way above the figures for 2018 and 2019.

–Unemployment falling from 6.3 percent in January 2021 (Donald Trump‘s last month in office) to just 4.2 percent last month, a historic drop in such a short time. And jobless claims just hit a new 52-year low.

Indeed, The Hill calls this “the fastest economic recovery in history.”

Moreover, the Biden Boom is no accident, but rather, a result of the Biden administration’s phenomenal efforts to vaccinate Americans against COVID; the American Rescue Plan which put money in the pockets of many Americans; and now the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (which may soon be followed by the Build Back Better Act). It turns out that Americans really do like competence in government, or what we call Good Government, and that is part of the Democratic Party’s brand.

However, it is one thing to have big accomplishments, and another thing to make sure everyone is aware of them. As we know, there are several obstacles to Americans knowing the full truth about the Biden Boom or any other good news of Democratic efforts:

–Democrats are not always good at focusing on and spreading good news. In fairness, however, President Biden, his White House team and other Democratic officials and leaders are doing a pretty good job on the economic and jobs story this year. Here are a couple of examples of what is hopefully a trend of improvement in communications:

–The Republican Lie Machine is always in full swing, trying to distract us with all kinds of Culture War shiny objects, the latest one being the significance of a Christmas tree on fire.

–Big Media often swallow and repeat the stories that Republicans spoon-feed to them, rather than doing the hard work of investigating and reporting accurately on their own.

So how do we overcome these obstacles? In addition to Democratic leaders continuing a good communications trend themselves, those of us who are active on social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) need to share the good news. The term “Biden Boom” is perfect for sharing. And those who do not participate on social media still have more traditional means of getting the word out, including upcoming holiday dinner table conversations with family and friends, and the good old office water cooler, which nowadays still might be a Zoom call.
