The Republicans’ War on America

Republican attack on U.S. Capitol

In his February 2021 annual letter to shareholders, Warren Buffett, considered to be the most successful investor of all time, wrote:

Our unwavering conclusion: Never bet against America.

However, looking back at 2021, the Republican Party certainly failed to heed Mr. Buffett’s advice. The Republicans bet against America when they disbelieved and then tried to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. They bet against America when they incited, supported and funded a terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol that was designed to stop the certification of Electoral Votes for then President-elect Joe Biden. They bet against America when they fought, and continue to fight, against sensible COVID protections such as masks, vaccinations, school accommodations, and social distancing. And they bet against America when they side with one of our most dangerous global opponents, Russia, to hurt American democracy.

Surely, the Republicans’ War on America presents some stark campaign fodder for the 2022 elections.

The Republicans already had a War on Women, a War on Muslims and a War on Immigrants. These divisive tactics tend to help Republicans shore up their party base, but that’s not enough realistically to win nationwide elections (without massive cheating, of course, which they try to do as well). Now the Republicans have broadened their alienation tactics beyond these groups to include the whole country. For 2022, therefore, the Republicans’ War on America should be an important part of the Democrats’ campaign strategy.

Now, we’re not saying that attacking the Republicans should be the only Democratic election strategy. Rather, it should be a counterpoint to talking about the Democrats’ achievements, which could be described as “Democrats Deliver.” These achievements include great improvements in COVID vaccination, the U.S. economy, unemployment (down in one year from 6.2 percent to just 3.9 percent), job creation (the greatest one-year record in U.S. history), wage growth, record stock market highs, passing a law to provide massive infrastructure improvements, rejoining the world community in the Paris Climate Agreement, and more. As we have suggested before, the Democrats should run on patriotism. And here is President Biden himself, showing us how it’s done:

If the Democrats can get their act together this campaign season, they will have a lot to say about themselves, the Republicans, and this great country which we are trying to defend against our enemies, both foreign and domestic.
