Chris Christie’s American Hustle

It’s no secret that “American Hustle,” one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2013, is based on the “Abscam” scandal that ensnared New Jersey lawmakers. Watching the movie during the past week, as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s “Bridgegate” scandal unfolds, it’s nearly impossible not to think of Bridgegate and Abscam together.

Saying much about “American Hustle” might give away spoilers. But if you look up Abscam, you will learn about corrupt New Jersey politicians, bribery regarding real estate development deals, influence peddling, a game-changing event (the legalization of casino gambling in Atlantic City in 1976), fancy hotels, private jets and more.

Likewise, Chris Christie’s Bridgegate now involves allegations of corrupt New Jersey politicians, accusations of political malfeasance over real estate deals, influence peddling, another game-changing event (Hurricane Sandy), a Governor who likes his fancy hotels, private jets, and more.

As both the Bridgegate scandal and the “American Hustle” Oscar buzz heat up, expect more and more people to link them together in their minds.
